Welcome to the Econ 108 Research Blog

I have set up this blog to help guide you through your class research assignment. Subscribe to this blog (see bottom of page "subscribe to posts") with an RSS reader account and you'll receive updates regarding changes to the blog, as well as suggestions for research resources.

Use the Meebo IM box below to instant message your research questions to me on Mondays between 12 and 2pm and Wednesdays between 9 and 10pm OR, and as always, you may email me and set up a consultation: scottk@ucsc.edu.

Assignment Recommendations:

1. set up an RSS feed for New York Times articles. This will help you keep track of your policy issue and alert you to stories to track down in the print pages.
2. start looking for books and articles early. Interlibrary Loan is an excellent service, but it is not an overnight service and cannot be relied on for last minute research results.
3. ask for help when you need it. The library's hours are available here. Help with research is available at the Reference Desk 7 days a week.

RSS Feeds Information & Abbreviated Chat Hours on 12/3

RSS Feeds:

A couple of people have asked about making the NY Times RSS feeds more specific to their topics, so I thought it worth a post. Unfortunately, the Times feeds are pretty well set and don't allow for refining. However, you can set more refined feeds in the database Business Source Premier, for example. To do so, run a search with your keywords (ex.: immigration and u.s. business). After you have run a search, at the top of the search results, you'll see an RSS feed symbol and the option to "create an alert for this search." Select that option and a pop up box appears describing your search along with an RSS link. Click on the RSS link and, if you have a bloglines account, you will be prompted to subscribe via bloglines. It should work similarly for other kinds of feed aggregators. Set more than one feed alert (using different keywords) in the database, that way you will have a greater chance of catching articles related to your topic. Email me with any questions regarding this option.
